SBDC Helps Small Businesses Beat Odds

  • Share |

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review features the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center in its article “IUP development program helps small businesses beat the odds.”

The article talks about the ‘sobering’ survival rates for small businesses start-ups but also mentions that there are resources for aspiring entrepreneurs to help start their business -- like the consulting and education services provided by the Pennsylvania SBDC:

IUP SBDC Director, Tony Palamone, explained that there is a learning curve to starting up a business.

"When you start a business it can be overwhelming," said SBDC director Tony Palamone, "and we've done a lot of work with start-ups, developing a business plan to get financing, looking at bookkeeping and focusing on marketing, which is more than just buying ads."

The article also talks about services the SBDC provides for existing businesses, particularly helping established business owners refine their business strategy or think more broadly about a specific issue.

"Working with existing businesses is a little harder because, for the most part, when an existing business comes to us they have what we might call a 'pain' or a problem, something specific that they are looking for help with," Palamone said. "However, we found that they must look more generally in a larger strategic way. Most problems are systemic of a strategy or tactic, so we deal with the owners' tactics," said Palamone.
