The Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) will be available to meet with rural business owners as part of the regional forum, “Made in Rural America,” taking place on Wednesday, June 4 in Canonsburg.  The event is one of five happening nationwide, hosted by the Appalachian Regional Commission. The full-day forum is targeted to rural firms who wish to expand their international market opportunities, but all small business owners with an interest in exporting are encouraged to attend.

The SBDC recognizes the importance of educating small businesses on ways to grow their business by finding new international customers. The regional forum is the first of five across the country that will highlight federal, state, and local resources to help rural businesses and community leaders take advantage of export opportunities and sell their products and services to markets abroad.

Attendees will hear from experienced local exporters and from local, state, and federal organizations about opportunities to help them meet their export objectives.  Zeigler Brothers, an East Berlin-based manufacturer of aquaculture products and winner of the 2013 SBA National Exporter of the Year and President’s ‘E’ award for exports will be in attendance to discuss their company’s export success. Other speakers include U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary and Chair of the White House Rural Council Tom Vilsack, Senior Policy Advisor for Rural Affairs for the White House Domestic Policy Council, Doug McKalip, ARC Federal Co-Chair Earl Gohl, and Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture George Greig.

The Pennsylvania SBDC encourages rural businesses to attend to learn about access to new exporting possibilities that would ultimately add jobs and ensure continuing growth. Certified international trade consultants from local SBDCs will be on hand to meet with small business owners during one-on-one working sessions during the event.

The “Made in Rural America” event is free to attend and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on June 4. Registration is required, and also includes lunch. The forum will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn (Southpointe Business Park) located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. More information on the initiative is available on the White House website.
