Dr. Mary T. McKinney has been the Director of the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) since 1986. The SBDC consults with and  trains over 1500 business owners annually and is the organizer of the annual Entrepreneur’s Growth Conference. During her tenure as SBDC Director, Dr. McKinney has supervised several federal, state, and regional grants during her tenure at the SBDC, including two from the European Union, two Mexico-US AID Ties Partnership grants, a U.S. Department of Commerce MDCP grant and two U.S. Department of Education, Business and International Education grants. She was selected as an inaugural member of Duquesne’s Office of Research Hall of Fame for success in fund raising.


She is a community leader in small business including involvement as the Chairperson of the Western PA Small Business Network, coordinator of the Southwestern PA Entrepreneurial Assistance Network, past President of the PA Small Business Development Centers, and past Chair of Urban Redevelopment Authority Loan Review Committee. She has won the SBA Women in Business Advocate and the Celebrate & Share Woman of Achievement awards. The Duquesne University SBDC, in collaboration with the Wharton and Rutgers-Camden SBDCs was the winner of the SBA Champions of Collaboration award in 2012 for the Philadelphia District and Region 3.


Dr. McKinney obtained her Ph.D. in Public Administration and MPIA (Master of Public and International Affairs)  degrees from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Goucher College in Towson, Md.. She is an AEE Certified Renewable Energy Professional and NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional. She serves on the Board of Directors of NASBITE.


Prior to her tenure at Duquesne University, Dr. McKinney served as the computer systems manager and consultant with H. B. Maynard Consulting firm (specializing in industrial engineering) where she designed and managed the development of Maynard’s most successful software product, the MOST Computer System-- a productivity improvement system with international distribution.  Dr. McKinney is the co-author of a text on business management, has published articles in professional journals, written chapters in two books, and has presented several refereed papers and workshops at small business and international trade national conferences.

Christine Hughes has worked for the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for the past 22 years. She spent the first 13 years as a business consultant, assisting over 1,000 entrepreneurs in areas such as business planning, financial analysis, marketing, and general business management. Presentations include, “Writing a Business Plan”, “Growing Your Business”, “Low Cost Marketing Ideas” and “The First Step: Business Start-up Essentials”. 


Currently, Christine is the Training Manager and is responsible for creating, developing and marketing all of the workshops and conferences at the SBDC, as well as maintaining the website. She continues to work as a business consultant in the outreach areas of Beaver and Lawrence Counties. 


Christine received her MBA from Duquesne University in 1993.

Brent G. Rondon is currently the Manager of the Global Business Program at the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  He consults on export topics to manufacturing, technology and service companies.  He recently won the Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) grant from the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce to increase trade to the Pacific Alliance countries of Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile for the 2014-2017 period. The industry focus will be infrastructure, building and construction, mining, oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, transportation equipment and engineering firms.   In June of 2013, he led a Pennsylvania Trade Mission to Panama and Colombia funded by the STEP grant from the SBA. He also received grants from the USAID to work with Aguascalientes, Guadalajara and Monterrey for the 2006-2012 period. The industry focus was international trade, renewable energy and energy efficiency.


He oversees the CITRA – Center for International Regulatory Assistance, which provides information about CE Mark, WEEE, ROHS and REACH. He also oversees the Center for Green Industries where they assist exporters of green products.


He is a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) from NASBITE, he is a lecturer at NASBITE International annual conferences and local universities in the Pittsburgh region. He is in the board of Global Pittsburgh and the Latin American Cultural Union.


He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in Lima, Peru and a Master’s Degree of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. He is fluent in Spanish and intermediate Portuguese.
