Marilyn and Tim Satterfield started NuWeld out of their garage in Trout Run a little more than five years ago. Today, they have over 20 employees and a 14,000 square foot production facility. NuWeld provides specialty welding services at its own facilities and at clients' sites and can fabricate pressure vessels, power boilers, piping sub-assemblies, and specially designed fabrications to meet client needs.

How did these entrepreneurs get to where they are today? a lot of hard work and dedication, plus a little help from the Lock Haven University Small Business Development Center (SBDC), has helped smooth the way.

When she found that she needed assistance with some of the more complicated functions of a computer accounting program, Marilyn approached the Lock Haven University SBDC after a referral from Representative Steven W. Cappelli (R-83).

The SBDC helped educate the Satterfields on the computer program and two years later, in 2002, the Satterfields decided to seek new facilities for NuWeld. By then NuWeld employed 8 people in its specialty welding operations and they sought financing for its expansion. At this point, Marilyn again contacted the SBDC for assistance.

The SBDC helped NuWeld find sources of funding and write the business plan necessary for obtaining expansion capital. Marilyn notes, “The SBDC was very helpful with our acquiring the needed funding. They helped us get in touch with the right people – where to get the funding for the building and how to coordinate all the funding from the appropriate financers.”

Since purchasing the new facility, NuWeld has created20 new jobs to fill highly skilled positions including engineers, draftspersons, and, of course, welders. Over the last year, NuWeld's business has grown 500%, and the company continues to seek new business. At present, NuWeld is working with the SBDC to gain certification as a Pennsylvania women-owned business (WBE).

When asked about the assistance from the SBDC, Marilyn said, “Absolutely the SBDC has been there 100% for us. and if they don't have the answers we need, they'll find them. They do good work.”
