Overview

Many students in the U.S. have entrepreneurial aspirations and energy that help drive job creation in the country. According to data from Millennial Branding and oDesk, nearly sixty percent of millennials surveyed consider themselves entrepreneurs, with ideas, capital, and plans laid out for ventures. Starting a venture while in college is a great way to gain valuable experience as a business owner while still having the support to discover what works and what doesn't.

Programs and Resources

  • The Blackstone LaunchPad supports student entrepreneurship in the Greater Philadelphia region through a partnership between Philadelphia University, Temple University and the University City Science Center by providing university students with the skills, knowledge and guidance to transform new ideas into viable companies. It is is a co-curricular program that is open to all students at Philadelphia and Temple Universities, regardless of academic major and is funded by a $3 million grant from the Blackstone Charitable Foundation.

  • Dorm Room Fund (DRF) is a student-run venture firm that invests in student-run companies. They have a student investment teams based in Philadelphia (among other cities). In addition to financial capital, DRF provides resources for businesses in their portfolio including: discounts and partnerships with premier service providers, PR, mentorship from advisors, DRF events, and access to a national network of other student entrepreneurs.

  • FOUNDER.org is a non-profit working with colleges, universities and research institutes around the world to advance student entrepreneurship. They pick fifty teams annually from their partner schools around the world to enter the annual FOUNDER.org class. They then teach student founders the critical skills they need to turn their ideas into high impact ventures and provide them with the funding to get them started. The top ten teams in the annual class receive $100K each upon entering the program and all the teams have access to an investment fund for student entrepreneurs.

  • The SBA Learning Center offers several free online courses. In addition to courses on general business topics like accounting and marketing, there is the Young Entrepreneur course that is designed specifically for the Millennial Entrepreneur.

  • Student Loan Deferment – If your student loan repayments are preventing you from starting your own business, the Student Startup Plan (through the White House-led Startup America initiative) enables college graduates, including those looking to start a business, to lower student loan repayments.
