Hayes Lubrication

The necessity of gasoline in our lives has become more and more painful at the pump for consumers and small businesses of the United States. Caleb Hayes, owner of Hayes Lubrication in DuBois is no different. For his company he regularly travels throughout Pennsylvania, including the counties of Centre, Union, Northumberland, Snyder, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Bedford, Somerset, Blair, and Huntington, as well as Garrett and Allegany counties in Maryland.

Hayes determined that he had to find a way to cut costs since gasoline prices continue to rise. Hayes contacted the Clarion University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in 2012 to find assistance to combat his rising costs. The SBDC began assisting him with the business planning process to analyze his costs. At the same time, the SBDC referred Hayes to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) in DuBois since Mr. Hayes is a service-disabled veteran. Through OVR, Mr. Hayes was eligible for a $10,000 matching grant as an entrepreneur.

With the completion of the business plan, Hayes obtained a $35,000 vehicle loan to purchase a Dodge truck and the $10,000 OVR matching grant. The grant was used to convert the new truck over to compressed natural gas (CNG). The conversion was performed by a local company, Alternative Fuel Solutions of Pennsylvania LLC in Mahaffey.

Caleb Hayes and his company no longer feel the pain at the pump, thanks, in part, to the SBDC, OVR, and CNG.
