In September of 2013, Conrad Lazor contacted the Saint Vincent College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) looking for assistance and guidance in adding a new furniture line. Lazor Family Furniture, a retail furniture store, was established in 1976 by Conrad and Bonnie Lazor in Latrobe, PA. In the early 1990s, Conrad’s children, Shawn and Nikole, became involved with the business. It was around this time that the family first engaged the Saint Vincent College SBDC for help in developing a business plan.
Assistance provided by the Saint Vincent College Small Business Development Center included loan assistance, business plan development and a comprehensive market analysis of the business operation. During the engagement various suggestions were made to improve the business operation. In addition, industry specific information was analyzed and incorporated to further demonstrate the feasibility of the project. Several client meetings occurred within a relatively short period of time to construct financial projections and complete a formal business plan.
There was some urgency required in order to have fresh inventory on the floor for the fall selling season. Accordingly, Lazor Family Furniture was encouraged by their SBDC advisor to approach a regional micro-lender in neighboring Washington County. A business plan was developed to provide funds to increase their Bassett inventory to a level sufficient enough to obtain Bassett dealership status. In early November of 2013, the business obtained a SBA microloan from the Washington County Council on Economic Development that totaled $50,000. The package also included working capital to complement the proceeds for the new furniture line.
Lazor Family Furniture has experienced steady growth over the past year even in this trying economy. The company now employs 8 hard working individuals in the Latrobe area. The principals continue to receive management assistance from the Saint Vincent College SBDC.
