A.S.K. Insurance

With over seventeen years of experience in the insurance industry, Kimberly Holohan was an expert in helping people protect themselves and their businesses from financial loss. She prided herself on her unwavering commitment to customer service and ability to help people choose the best policies and coverage to provide them security and peace of mind. But when Kim developed the vision of starting her own insurance agency, she knew that she would need expert guidance in many other areas, and so she approached the Bucknell University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for help.

While working with a business consultant at the SBDC, she received assistance with business start-up steps and preparing a business plan. She knew the task of starting meant that her firm would be a “scratch agency,” i.e. none of the customers of her current firm would follow her to her new business. She would need to build her portfolio “from scratch” and, with an industry average of three years to build an independent client base, she would be cut out for her work. Kim decided to name the business “A.S.K.” combining the initials of her children, Addison and Shaun, with her own. “My children are my world; I wanted to open the agency for them, and because I love insurance.” She soon found a location in Elysburg and continued to work with the SBDC throughout the process of starting up.

For example, her SBDC consultant assisted her in establishing an online presence and promotions, especially through an active and interactive Facebook page. A.S.K. Insurance opened on August 11, 2014. It provides a variety of insurance services to customers including auto, home, and business insurance, as well as workers’ compensation, trucking, and flood insurance. The firm is strongly focused on customer service and strives to ensure that clients are using the right policies for their needs. Kim intends to capitalize on the industry trend of rapidly increasing demand for cyber liability insurance and employment practices insurance to grow her firm.
