Onyxx Hill Masonry: Building on a Strong Foundaton

John Hill’s 30 years of construction experience includes service in the U.S. Army and as a successful business owner in another state. His Connecticut-based firm held an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau for several years with solid customer base and steady relationships with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.

When he and his wife Rita planned a move to Pennsylvania, he was confident he would be able to establish his reputation in a new market, and targeted an SBA loan to help him get re-established in a new location. Not only were they changing locations, they would be starting a completely new company with a new name: Onyxx Hill Masonry and Construction LLC (named for their pet Doberman, Onyxx).

As he developed a new business plan, John sought help from the Bucknell University Small Business Development Center (SBDC), who helped him gather demographic information, research competitive contractors, and offered guidance in compiling financial projections. Even though he had operated a business previously and was able to put a solid plan together, he appreciated how the SBDC helped him put it in order and get it ready to present to his lenders.

After several months of planning and efforts, John received the SBA Guaranteed loan he was hoping for and joined the SBDC and his lender, Service First Federal Credit Union, in a celebratory ribbon cutting. With their assistance, John is confident that he is building his new business on a sturdy foundation. As a U.S. Army veteran, John hopes to be able to offer employment to other veterans with experience in the masonry industry and looks forward to many years of success.
